As part of a growing effort to improve school safety and promote gun violence prevention, the Colorado General Assembly recently passed House Bill 25-1250, legislation that directly impacts K–12 schools across the state. This new law introduces specific requirements for local education providers to help ensure that families are informed and equipped with essential prevention resources.

Whether you’re a school administrator, educator, or parent, it’s important to understand what this bill entails and how it will be implemented in your school community.

What is House Bill 25-1250?

House Bill 25-1250 aims to increase awareness and education about gun violence prevention by mandating the distribution of educational materials to families of students enrolled in Colorado’s K–12 schools.

Under this law, each local education provider—which includes school districts, charter schools, and BOCES—is required to share prevention resources created by the Office of Gun Violence Prevention with all parents, guardians, and legal custodians at the beginning of each school year.

What Does This Mean for Schools?

To ensure compliance with House Bill 25-1250, schools must complete the following steps:

1. Access the Official Prevention Materials

The required materials are developed and maintained by the Office of Gun Violence Prevention and can be found at the link below:

2. Distribute to Families

At the start of each school year, schools must distribute these materials to all parents, guardians, and legal custodiansof enrolled students. This can be done via print or digital format, depending on your school's communication methods.

3. Post on Your School Website

To ensure accessibility, schools must also post the materials or a direct link to them on their websites.

4. Document Compliance

While not explicitly required by the bill, schools are strongly encouraged to keep records of when and how materials were distributed and posted online. This can help demonstrate compliance and support accountability.

When Does the Law Take Effect?

Schools should prepare to be in compliance by the start of the 2025–26 school year.

Why This Matters

The goal of this legislation is simple but significant: to empower families with information and encourage safer school communities through education and awareness. By providing families with accessible, reliable resources, schools can play a proactive role in reducing gun-related incidents and fostering a culture of prevention and preparedness.
